My only negative is the lack of an on/off switch. I have been very pleased with my Nesco dehydrator.
The only note I can think to make: I read reviews saying that it ran higher than the temp. I chose the Nesco FD-75PR 700-Watt Food Dehydrator because of the power, the size and the temperature controls. So far, I have dehydrated onions, red and green peppers, bananas, apples, oranges, and grapes and have been very pleased with the process and outcome. You will figure out the perfect time quickly though. Even when drying salmon the fish smell is almost non-existent and the humming noise is not disturbing. Otherwise it functions well. Directions are a bit vague, so everything we have dried has been an adventure. I can see how they might warp during the dry cycle in a dishwasher. They hand washed and air dried just fine.
Current cost of power where I live is around 10 cents per kWh so this unit costs me a little over 4 cents per hour. If I run it 10 hours a week, I’m looking at around $1.82 per month.
This is the second Nesco Dehydrator I have purchased. The first lasted over 27 years and prepared more than 1000 pounds of jerky and fruits! It is not a lot of fun when they are dry to remove them from a round shaped tray with a giant hole in the middle.
This cheap little machine is amazing. Don’t worry about the lack of a timer. Cannot wait to do jerky with my grandkids! Since purchasing this, I’ve dried several items – pears, plums, bananas, tomatoes, thyme, oregano and cranberries. I can honestly tell you that for the price, with this dehydrator, you get exactly what the average person needs for effective and efficient small to medium sized batch drying. of course, I wish it had an on/ off switch and a timer, but you can get a timer/ power control (similar to what you’d use for Christmas lights) and use that so it’s not a deal breaker for me- especially at this price.
Even the Nesco square dehydrator has a hole in the middle. All the recipes in all the raw food books that call for dehydrating specify using an Excalibur. I am very pleased with this product. This is my first food dehydrator and I only wish I would have bought one sooner.
Be prepared for salivating dogs that are unwilling to leave the kitchen and fantastic dehydrated food. Home Glass Repair.
